Vespers
This service has been offered at St. Bede's in recent years past. It is different from many of the other services at St.
Bede's, in that it is more meditative, reflective, and is almost entirely
chanted. Rich in symbolism, incense, song and ritual, it is also very
easy to experience and enjoy. As the seasons change, this service
reminds us that God is always there, greeting us in summer's brightness and
winter's dark; autumn's frost and spring's warming rays.

Vespers begins with praise to God for the gift of light -- both the
physical light that enlightens our senses, and the spiritual light that
pulls us out of darkness (as St. John reminds us, no darkness can overcome
the light of Christ!). Candles are lit and we sing the praises of God as the
day draws to a close. Special evening psalms are sung and prayers offered,
which remind us of God's activity in life's various times of darkness (the
night, our own times of trial, and as we face death).
The service continues with a reading from the Holy Scriptures, then the
high-point of Vespers: the Song of Mary from the Gospel according to St.
Luke. We join Mary in praise of God for the divine power that overcomes all
obstacles between ourselves and God. We then pray for others, finally
offering the prayer Jesus taught as the example of what Christian life is
all about. We conclude with a brief time of silent meditation, thanksgiving
to God for this time of worship, and a blessing as we go forth into the
first night of a new week, knowing that in God we have been given the lamp
that lightens our path, shining out for all to see.

Any person - Christian or non-Christian alike -- may participate in
Vespers. It is open to all as the Light of Christ is given freely to all.
Come, share in the light!
